As I've done with Dark Souls II and Bloodborne, I'm going to show you all the journey that I'm going to embark on. This entry will be short as I only have four hours in Dark Souls III due to real life so bare with me.
Now, when I usually start these games off, I pick whichever class has the most strength because I'm a melee build in every game I play. I saw they had a pyromancer class this time around and remembering just how much Pyromancy has helped me in the past two games, it was a no brainer to pick this class. After the intro you're dropped off in the first area, the Cemetery of Ash. This is the basic first area, where there are messages teaching you the basic mechanics of the game. No problems here. I immediately feel Bloodborne's effect on this game as it's much faster paced than the two previous Dark Souls games. It's business as usual until you get to a door that can't be opened. There's no prompt for it. Now, there's this giant solider in the middle of the area but he didn't move when I walked past him so I kept it moving. Obviously, Dark Souls don't play that. I went back to him and pulled the sword out of the soldier, which initiated the first boss fight. This guy is Iudex Gundyr. 10 minutes into Dark Souls III and you have the first beatable boss. IG isn't hard really, it was just surprising to me to see a boss this early. He has the basic attacks that can be telegraphed but once his health bar gets to half, like many of these bosses, he gets much harder as he transforms into some type of monstrosity. He beat me the first time but I got him the next, saving my pyromancy for the latter end of the fight, which worked because he is weak to fire. I beat the first boss!! After defeat, you can open the door and you get to the Firelink Shrine, which is the Majula/Hunter's Dream/main game hub of Dark Souls III. You use the sword you pulled out of Iudex Gundyr into the ground to create a bonfire. I stopped here on Tuesday.
Picking up the next day after work, I explored Firelink to see who did what and to familiarize who I was going to be buying stuff from, etc. Once done, I get to the bonfire and travel to the next destination. I walk to the door, open it and Dark Souls III truly begins as you're greeted with a gorgeous view of the next area, the High Wall of Lothric. This is a castle like area with many secrets and tough enemies. I died plenty of times. I died once to one of the knights. I died once because I didn't pay attention to a message saying the treasure chest was a mimic. This place reminds me a lot of the Forest of the Fallen Giants from Dark Souls II. I'm able to start making progress by finding another bonfire in the area. I haven't found a good enough weapon yet to replace my basic ax that came with the Pyromancer class, but I keep looking. Eventually, I get to what I absolutely knew was a boss area. It was an open area with a HUGE door just waiting to be opened. I was introduced to the game's 2nd boss, Vordt of the Boreal Valley. I really loved the names of the bosses so far! Vordt is harder than Iudex. By a lot. He's bigger and beast like and he can cause a new status effect, Frostbitten, by getting hit by his attacks. Vordt destroyed me. The first time, I came SOOOOO close to beating him as he had the smallest portion of life left but because I didn't heal earlier because I was cocky, he got me. This would proceed to me losing like 8 straight times to him. Eventually, I decided to go a different route and see what I hadn't explored yet, hoping to get more souls to level up and/or a different weapon or armor set. I'm glad I did because I found the old woman who gives you the banner you need to continue your journey after you defeat Vordt. I also found my first covenant by talking to her as well. Seeing that there was no where else to go, I went back to fight him, this time with some help from the summons outside the boss room. With their help, I easily beat Vordt, or, they easily beat Vordt. I got to the 2nd bonfire in the Undead Settlement before real life called.
So far, Dark Souls III is more of the same but it's charm, mystery and intrigue are all still there. No games makes me feel more nervous turning a corner than DS does. Once I make some more progress, I'll do another entry!
