SOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....I've been playing Dark Souls II and nothing else since Tuesday and I just don't understand how I finished the first one. Dark Souls 1 was my Game of the Year from 2011. It was an amazingly difficult experience that was hard to put down and even harder to get through. After I defeated Gwyn somewhere after 50 hours, I felt relief. Then they announced DS2 in 2012, I flipped.
I've played DS2 for just about 7 hours and MAN, it's the same old toughness. I died like 5 minutes in from that hippo creature in the beginning. I don't know why I thought I could grab the treasure and run but I just had to try. What I got was my first achievement, my first death and a good smile because I knew that wouldn't be my last. So I got started, created my character and was off. I'm a Warrior because that's what I was in the original and Demon's Souls. I'm very basic. Walked around, completely bypassed the tutorial area (I went back a hour later) and went straight to the main hub Majula and started exploring. I found the Forest of Giants and started to remember how exactly to play the game. I got to the first bonfire and that's when the trouble began. The next area was just stupidly tough. I think I was just not being patience enough but I was stuck here. FOR AN HOUR. Easily. I went through the area so many times, enemies started disappearing. It was like the game felt sorry for me, basically throwing me a bone. I finally got through the beginning area and made it to the first boss (well for me at least) The Last Giant. I lost the first three times, the first because I was intimidated as crap. The fourth time was the charm though as I was patient, waited my time and finally defeated the Giant. So, now, I'm feeling VERY confident, I just got a bunch of souls and I went to level up my skills and my weapons. After that, I started exploring more with the key I just got from the boss. I kept exploring until guess what? I FOUND ANOTHER BOSS, harder than the last called The Pursuer. I died 3 times before giving up. I went in a different direction and ended up in a castle area called Heide's Tower of Flame.
I found some big knights here offering up BIG souls and I could tell my skills were getting better, to when I first beat the original. So, here's the thing. I went up to a place called The Cathedral of Blue. There was some mist so I went in, thinking it just connected to the next area. NO! Guess what it was? ANOTHER STINKING BOSS. And who is it? Freaking DRAGON SLAYER ORNSTEIN or a really good lookalike. I was so taken aback, I died. I got a couple hits, but I was just laughing and feeling despair, knowing how many deaths him and his partner Smough caused. Does that mean Smough is in the game? Lord, I hope not. Anyway, I don't know if it was Ornstein as the name was Old Dragon Slayer. Yeah, it's Ornstein. So I lost to him and went another way and found Dragonrider AKA Dark Souls II easiest boss yet. I mean, I only fought 2 but compared to The Last Giant, it's like they're from different game universes. With some patience, I beat him in one fell swoop. Piece of cake. And that's where I at now.
DS2 doesn't change much of the formula, it's more of the same RPG system of the rest of the Soul series but it's tried and true. It's fun learning from your mistakes and conquering enemies that have caused you many deaths. You can really feel yourself getting stronger and better at this game as you progress and I think that feeling is lost in most games. I'm in love all over again with Dark Souls II and I can't wait to delve much deeper into the game.
Interviews are coming everyone! Like, SOON!
